Many of the pin-loom projects you’ll find in Little Looms include multiple pin-loom pieces—and often multiple shapes of pin-loom pieces—joined together. I often think about pin-loom pieces as building blocks: what you can do with them is limited only by your imagination. That includes making wonderful projects using one—that’s right, just one—pin-loom piece. I am, of course, talking about mug rugs.
Mug rugs, also known as coasters or cocktail carpets, are a truly fun project for pin-loom weavers—and not just because they’re “easy.” In fact, I’d argue that mug rugs are the perfect opportunity to let your pin-loom weaving shine. With most pin-loom projects, you are admiring the way in which the pin-loom pieces are joined to create patterns or a three-dimensional shape. In a mug rug, however, all the focus is on the pin-loom piece itself: the yarn, any patterns, and any embellishments.
As with any project, you'll need to base your design and finishing choices around the intended use of the project. For example, textured yarn can add visual interest, but if the yarn is too lumpy and bumpy, it might be the best place to rest your glass. You'll also need to decide what and how many design elements to use, and whether you'll need to add a waterproof barrier after weaving.
If you feel overwhelmed by the options, don't worry! I've got some design suggestions as well as tips and techniques for weaving mug rugs that are as useful as they are beautiful.
